Winter's grip loosened just in time to allow a springy assemblage of skaters to take to the outdoors and work like spring chickens on pumping up their technique and balance, April 4-6, 2003, near the nation's capital.

Over two dozen skaters burgeoned like flowering angiosperms, dedicating themselves to the kind of practice that will soon cause their budding skating to bear fruit. It was a visual treat to see skaters progressing from simple sticks to buds to flowers to cherries like a time-lapse movie. And not a single lemon in the bunch!

An abundance of gal power helped the guys stay constantly stoked, every single skater who started the workshop skated until the sweet end. Thanks to Julie, who blocked off plenty of skating space with a behemouth of a Mercedes, skaters enjoyed Sunday's session with a big bike race in the background.

Participants may have had modest expectations for their own improvement, but after just a few of the 16 hours of instruction, they noticed the tremendous transformations underway. Everybody got the hang of extracting power out of their hips and heels, yielding speed that at once terrified and thrilled.

Biscotti Girl (a.k.a. Concave Bootie), Stuart Austin, the Vanderhoefs, Barrie, and Lori and Daryl were all huge behind-the-scenes helpers who made the experience seamlessly fun.

Skater favors included TWINCAM ILQ-9's, Wigwam socks, Explore race wheels, workshop shirts, and Transpack goodies. Thanks!
