Workshoppers got the hang of skating in inclement weather on Saturday before enjoying superb spring conditions on Sunday at the ILQ-9 Eddy Matzger Workshop in New York's Central Park, April 25-27, 2003.
Skaters learned how to focus in spite of myriad distractions. There were birds, dogs, bird dogs, gawking tourists, and tykes on bikes to tune out. The presence of another islander, John Taha from Moorea, who wafted smells of paradise from his well-oiled cafe latte skin, was one of the more welcome attention grabbers.
As usual, the workshop was generously supported by a local company made good, Transpack. Not only one of the worskhop's major sponsors, Transpack also opened up its private residence to a boatload of skaters for Friday and Saturday evening's orientation and video presentations. Skaters starred in their own productions, making Broadway seem like child's play compared to the choreographed excellence of all the skating theatrics.
The indomitable New York spirit helped skaters conquer over 16 hours of on and off-skate challenges. The off-skate portion of the workshop alone seemed like a day's workout in and of itself. Nearly every skating drill had it's own off-skate version, so Saturday showers were actually a blessing inside, allowing skaters the time to properly explore stroke mechanics and commit them to muscular memory.
Skaters were especially intent on developing their double pushing and hill-climbing techniques, which they had ample opportunity to practice on the Great Lawn Oval and on the dreaded 110th street hill, up which skaters amazingly found themselves double pushing!
Special thanks to Transpack, Raymond Verdaguer, TWINCAM, Wigwam, Bobward, and Baway for their continued generous support the best show in town.
