Some very good skate and meteorologic mojo got going in the District of Colombia at the Access to Speed Workshop, June 16-18, 2000; while most of the region shivered under drenching rains, the collective will of the skaters staved off precipitation and allowed unimpeded learning fun until the conclusion of each day.

Although physically drained at the end of each day, participants came away fortified and excited at the prospect of constantly improving and enjoying the noble struggle towards effortless speed and grace on skates.

The videotape review of Saturday's skating was a raucous affair that at once entertained and reminded skaters of the road ahead. Although no one popped the coveted balloon, the overall direction of everybody's pushes was outstanding.

The average knee bend angle for the group as a whole was and astoundingly low 96 degrees, aided in part by a Louis's all-time workshop record 71 degree sit, which served to skate him forwards at the speed of light during the concluding stage race, consisting of a team trial, and individual time trial, and a five lap mass race.

The Access to Speed Workshop was miraculously assisted by Roy and Shawn Van der Hoef, benificent acts of God, Agamemnon -- father of Electra, as well as by bigtime sponsors Salomon, TWINCAM, Explore, Transpack, Wigwam, and Bobward Flynn.
