Skaters were worried that heat stroke was going to be a factor with a 3 p.m. start, but the weather cooperated with relatively cool conditions for the start. To make things extra challenging, a light rain began falling on-and-off only a half-hour into the race.

The best part of the race was the crowd support. Not a kilometer went by without bunches of people standing on the side of the road yelling encourgement or offering a passing high-five. Video footage captured a man yelling "Va cherie" (Go darling) at first place finisher Theresa Cliff.
